NES Sonic the Hedgehog

You read it right, this is Sonic on the Nintendo Entertainment System. More specifically, this is an improvement hack to another well-known “Sonic on the NES” game – Somari.

This game is seriously impressive in many ways, but it’s not without it’s frustrations. Graphically I think it’s as good as you’re going to make Sonic look on the NES.

I was also impressed at how large they were able to make the levels and how many zones there were, they even added a special stage.

The Chaos Emeralds are gone, but that’s a reasonable cut in my opinion.

My major gripes are two things that work together to bring the overall experience down for me. First, the enemy placement and behavior can be infuriating.

And second, hit boxes / hit detection either seemed too large at times and/or were otherwise ignored; just seemed like of a mess. (Not that I could do better)

Those things in tandem amplified the difficulty in a sort of cheap way.

That being said, what they got right is amazing. Most times it really does feel like this is how a real licensed Sonic game for the NES would have turned out.
